Pacific atoll and island perennial agriculture project
Island and atoll agriculture

For commercial and family food production.  Islands and atolls present challenging environments for agriculture in terms of high and low soil pH, extremes of rainfall, low soil fertility and saline intrusion. Strategies and species are determined by the local environmental parameters in an effort to remediate the limiting factors for successful production. Includes nitrogen fixing biomass production for mulch and fertilizer, medicinal crops, perennial vegetables and Moringa, greenhouse crops, Neem trees, multipurpose trees, agroforestry, Artocarpus species, orchards, and soil remediation, and deep nutrient cycling. Plant materials and extension and educational resources available.

Leaf crops can supply more protein per square meter than any other crop type. Amino acids in leaves are well balanced, unlike grains and legumes. Leaf protein concentrate is easily produced by a simple process, adapted to home use or at the village level.  It also has commercial potential, with a processor in France having an industrial scale leaf concentrate facility. Leaf protein concentrate can be made with leaves not normally consumed directly, such as those from beans and many others. It is a highly digestible nutrient dense product with a very high 55% protein content, and a significant concentration of vitamins and minerals.  For family food security, and village industries.
