Animal Agriculture and Climate

The Single Greenhouse Gas Reduction Strategy With the Greatest Impact

Facts from published scientific literature --

ONLY ONE STRATEGY HAS THE POTENTIAL TO DRASTICALLY REDUCE GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS AND PREVENT RAIN FOREST BURNING.  IT IS NOT THE TRANSPORTATION, INDUSTRY, OR ELECTRICITY GENERATION SECTORS. IT IS ANIMAL AGRICULTURE.

This section relates to factory farming and the over consumption of animal products in many countries.  It does not meant for developing areas, where families may rely on a few animals for subsistence.

1.  Elimination of animal agriculture results in a 70 to 73% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, obviously a highly significant amount.  That is far more than the entire transportation sector, including every car, bus, truck, ship, and aircraft on the planet.

2.  A plant based diet is the SINGLE GREATEST CONTRIBUTION TO GREENHOUSE GAS REDUCTION POSSIBLE, offering the largest decrease by far, of an individual’s environmental footprint.

Feedlot cattle use a tremendous amoutnt of feed and water while producing significant greenhouse gas

3.  Quitting animal foods results in several times more greenhouse gas reduction than if you stopped driving, flying, and used only solar energy, all combined.  It is also the greatest factor for reduction of environmental impacts from food production.

4.  Much rain forest burning is to clear land for cheap cattle production supplying fast food and big box chains. If you eat fast food, you are burning the rain forest, which amounts to 200,000 acres per day. Of the millions of students and others protesting climate change, how many have the conviction to quit fast food or switch to a plant based diet?

5.  Leaf protein products represent the most efficient strategy for protein production. Leaf crops produce more protein per acre than any other, easily processed into leaf protein concentrate which can be added to many foods.

6.  By eliminating animal agriculture, the area of land used for global agriculture could be reduced by approximately 80% (Read the Oxford University study). That's correct, over 3/4 of the world's farm land is now used for animal agriculture, as it is a very inefficient process.

7.  That would open enough farm land to easily feed the world's population.

8.  It would also solve water resource scarcity, and animal waste pollution problems in many areas. Animal agriculture uses 35-40% of the worlds water footprint, and feedlots are some of the largest polluters.

9.  Global meat and milk production accounts for only 37% of protein and 18% of calories in the human diet, while being responsible for over 70% of greenhouse gas emissions.

10.  Concurrently, the savings in global healthcare would be significant, as the incidence of heart disease, strokes, cancer and other diseases would greatly decrease. America has the highest rates of chronic disease in the world.

11.  Aside from drastically reducing greenhouse gasses and improved health, a plant based diet offers several other personal advantages which you can individually explore.
