When renowned scientists and crucial proven published facts are censored and open scientific discourse is prohibited, serious negative consequences, fraud, and harm follow. Food self sufficiency is more important than ever in these times. LBCAS provides everything required to make this a reality, using many crop types and strategies designed for your specific location, needs, and diet. The Southwest deserts, dry lands and other climates support a wide selection of fruits and vegetables year round using appropriate varieties and cultivation techniques. Includes annual and perennial vegetables, root crops, fruit and nut trees, vine crops, culinary herbs and valuable medicinal plants (living pharmacy), for creation of successful family food production units.
On-site or remote consulting for crop selection, garden and greenhouse design, edible landscapes, automated irrigation systems, pest/disease control, fertilization, educational resources, low input and low labor sustainable methods, food forests and organic production. Fresh garden potatoes, a great staple food.
The best proven and highly productive perennial vegetables of the world that grow under many conditions in permanent systems. Some require summer shade and are suitable for intercropping, others are adapted to full summer sun. All share the characteristics of low maintenance, few pests and diseases, very high nutritional quality, and palatability. They include ground covers, vines, shrubs, and hedgerow trees. Excellent for edible landscaping and home use, and available from our nursery. Highly suited to multi-level mixed agroforestry systems and polyculture. Asparagus, Moringa, artichokes, edible cactus and perennial green onions included in this category. Perennial vegetables have high protein, mineral and vitamin content.
The climate of the Southwest deserts and other dry land areas have a long growing season, suitable for a wide variety of annual crops year round, with two to four seasons of production. Included are melons, squash, peppers, tomato, artichoke, eggplant, cucumber, corn, sweet potato, beans, grains, lettuce, kale and other greens (Ethiopian Kale shown above), leaf protein crops, radishes, potato and other root crops, onions, garlic, and numerous others. It is crucial to plant different crops at the right time, use the correct variety, and the correct growing methods for a given environment. Consultation for irrigation system design, fertilization, and pert/disease control and organic production.
The use of a home greenhouse greatly increases production for family food systems, especially during the cooler seasons. Warm weather crops such as cucumber, squash, tomato, bell pepper, root crops, melons, eggplant, okra, and corn, among many others, can be grown under cover in the fall, winter, and spring. Perennial vegetables may be grown in the greenhouse for winter production, and tropical fruit trees and other tropical crops are also possible. Providing a full range of consulting for greenhouse establishment. Sales of proven vented greenhouse structures, either as a kit, or turn key construction, including automated irrigation systems and plants.
A wide selection of fruit and nut trees are suitable for deserts and dry lands, including apple, peach, pear, nectarine, apricot, mulberry, persimmon, fig, citrus, jujube, avocado, plum, olive, almond, and many others. Utilization of appropriate varieties and growing methods are crucial for success. Grapes are highly adapted and productive, thriving in hot, dry environments. We can design and suggest the best varieties for home orchards/vineyards. Tree crops add value in new and existing landscapes, create an attractive property, and increase home market price. Home orchards are designed to be low maintenance with easy care.
An important part of the Living Family Pharmacy, the culinary and kitchen garden herbs grow very well in the desert, in full to partial sun. Aside from adding flavor, all culinary herbs have significant medicinal activity as well. They include Oregeno, Thyme, Rosemary, Marjoram, Savory, Zaatar, the Basil group, and the Mints, among others. Some of them, such as the Mints, will be more productive if grown under partial to full shade. The photo above shows spearmint, and the California native medicinal, Yerba Buena, growing in the low desert under a California Fan Palm oasis. A culinary herb garden close to the home is excellent for fresh kitchen use. They can also be dried for winter storage.
